Top 5 questions when buying a wooden floor

When purchasing a new wooden floor, you are more than likely going to have lots of questions running around in your head.  Here are our top 5 questions most asked by people buying a wooden floor.

1. Can I use this floor with underfloor heating?

Engineered wood flooring can be used with underfloor heating systems, but solid wood cannot.  Engineered hardwood has the capability to cope with the considerable changes in temperature present with underfloor heating.  Always read the manufacturers instructions and abide by the temperature guidelines.

2. What is the different between solid and engineered wooden flooring?

Solid wood flooring is a plank of flooring that has been made from a single piece of wood.  It usually has a tongue and grove fitting system.  Engineered wood flooring has been manufactured with a surface layer of real wood, and base layers (usually plywood) to give additional strength and stability. Engineered wood flooring is much more versatile and can be made into wider and longer planks as they have more dimensional stability.

 3. When buying a wooden floor how do I know how much I need?

You should measure your room accurately. If you have a standard size room you can do the following:

  • Measure the width of your room
  • Measure the length of your room
  • Multiply the width by the length
  • This will give you the amount of flooring needed
  • Add 5% onto this amount for wastage

If your room is not a standard shape and you would like help with this, please contact us and we will be happy to help.

4. How do I fit a wooden floor?

Fitting your wooden floor will depend on several different things: the type of flooring you have chosen, the subfloor that you have, and how you want to fit the floor.  The two main ways of fitting a floor are to float it over an underlay or to fix it down to the subfloor. We would always recommend that you use a professional floor fitter, but if you would like advice on the best way to fit your floor, contact one of out technically trained staff.

5. Is it easy to look after?

Wooden floors are really easy to look after.  You need to keep them clean by sweeping everyday with a soft brush.  Follow this by cleaning with a wooden floor spray mop at least once a week.  Other things that you need to be aware of are, wipe away any spills immediately, remove footwear before walking on your floor, and move any furniture carefully so that you don’t damage the floor.  For more advice on cleaning your floor, please see our Maintenance and Care Guide.
