Scratches and dents are an inevitable part of keeping a wooden floor. Even with a strict cleaning and maintenance routine, you are still likely to get some small scratches or marks. Don’t let this put your off though. These small marks and dents can actually add character, charm and authenticity to your floor. What you will want to do, though, is make sure that you don’t get any larger or preventable scratches. Here are some tips on how to keep a scratch free floor.
Top tips on how to keep a scratch free floor
Firstly, the best and most important thing to do is keep a regular cleaning routine. Aim to sweep your floor on a daily basis using a soft brush. Then clean your floor at least once a week with a pH neutral cleaning spray and microfibre mop. We recommend Bona Wooden Floor Spray Mop. By following this simple routine, you will prevent a build up of dust or dirt on your floor, which can cause dents and scratches if walked on.
Secondly, you should protect your floor from moving furniture. This is easy to do – simply apply felt protector pads to the bottom of any furniture that may regularly move (e.g. dining chairs). They will offer a soft cushioning between the chair leg and your wooden floor. For items that are less regularly moved, you just need to be careful and make sure that you lift the furniture, then place it down gently, rather than drag it across the floor.
We would also recommend using doormats at all entrance doors. This will help to catch any dirt or grit from the outdoors. It saves you from extra cleaning and helps to protect your floor!
Finally, try to remove all outdoor footwear before walking on your wooden floor. Especially dirty boots or shoes, football boots or stiletto heels. These can really cause damage, dents and scratches to your floor. Wearing slippers or soft indoor shoes is recommended.
- Sweep and clean your floor regularly
- Use felt protector pads on the bottom of furniture
- Do not drag heavy items across your floor
- Use door mats at entrance doors
- Remove outdoor footwear
- Use gentle cleaning products – nothing abrasive or rough
