Can I take home samples?

A reputable flooring dealer will always let you take home samples. Colors, styles, and patterns look great in pictures online, might even look great sitting on a showroom floor. When can my flooring choice be installed?

In most cases, you can’t walk in, select flooring, and have it installed the next day. There are lead times for most of the products you’ll choose from.

Take hardwood, for example. Depending on what choice you make, the hardwood might have to be ordered to ensure you receive the same product to install throughout your home. Hardwood also needs to acclimate to your home before installation. That means the product will be delivered and stored in your home for a series of days or even weeks before installation, to ensure it has adjusted to your home’s environment before it is installed.

Ask “when can you start” at the very beginning to ensure your deadlines are met. If you have a specific time you want the work completed by, tell us. It’s the best way to ensure we’re all on the same page throughout the process.

What about warranties and guarantees? 

Different manufacturers have different warranties. Different companies offer different guarantees for the products they install. In most cases, you’ll have two separate guarantees – one from the manufacturer of the product, another from the company that provides the installation. What happens if the flooring isn’t correctly installed? What does it take to ensure manufacturers’ guidelines are met throughout the process? Don’t be afraid to dig a little to find out more about the final product being installed in your home.

The more questions you ask, the more you may think of. Don’t stop until you’re comfortable with your final purchase.

Next-Day Installation or Special Order

Now that you have hand-picked your flooring, the Design Consultant will set up your installation day and time.  If you pick in-stock carpet, you can have next-day installation.  If it’s not in stock, the Order Entry department will let your Design Consultant know the estimated delivery of your custom flooring.  Once we have received it in our warehouse, one of our professional Customer Service Representatives will give you a call.  At this time, installation day and time will be set up. 

Flooring is Prepared for Delivery

Then our warehouse will cut your carpet to the specifications.  If you want to know how we cut our carpet, check out this blog and video of How We Cut Your Carpet.  If you have a hard-surface install (hardwood, laminate, or LVP/LVT), the warehouse will deliver the flooring to your home in advance.  This allows the flooring to acclimate to the temperatures and humidity levels of your home before installation.

Preparing Your Room(s) for Installation

When deciding the day and time for your installation, remember that you may need to prepare your room(s).  Give yourself time to have gas, water, and electronic equipment disconnected.

How Long Does it Take for Flooring Installation?

Remember, flooring installation of any kind falls under the home improvement category and takes time to do it right!  Depending on how many square feet are being installed, it may take more than one day to complete.  We do have install appointments in the morning when the kids are at school or on weekends.  If your installation is on a weekend, you won’t have to take time from work.  Less square footage means the install may take only a few hours.  If there is a previous flooring that needs to be removed before installation, that also takes time. The installer will then have to prep the subfloor to receive the new flooring.  The Carpet Guys installers want to make sure all facets of the installation are handled properly so your flooring will stand the test of time!

What terms you should know before you shop

Buying new carpet isn’t something you’ll do a lot of in your life. Carpet manufactured today is designed to last 5 to 15 years, depending on the quality, the padding used, and how well the carpet is maintained. It’s easy to get confused by the terminology, especially as new concepts enter the marketplace.

Backing – the material used to back the carpet and reinforce stability.

Density – this refers to how close the fibers are woven together into the backing. You’ll find this detailed as ounces per cubic yard. The higher the density, the more durable the carpet will ultimately be.

Fiber – fiber is one of the most important factors for durability. It’s the material used to create the yarn.

Pile – pile refers to the length of the yarn and the way it’s attached to the backing. You’ll have loop pile or cut pile to select from.

Twist – with a cut pile, the twist comes from how many times the fiber is twisted together on themselves. Higher twist counts, in general, mean better performance.

Weight – face weight refers to how much fiber is used, whereas total weight refers to the backing and the yarn.

Of course, there are many more terms that refer specifically to type, style, and various manufacturing processes. When you have a question, just ask.

Evaluating your room use

When you shop, the first question a flooring consultant will ask you is what room you’re looking to add carpet to. Why? Because that shapes the direction they’ll suggest for what type of carpet handles best.

Not all carpet is designed for every room in your home. You wouldn’t install delicate carpet in a high-traffic office space. Nor would you install commercial grade carpet in a baby’s room. The more questions a consultant asks, the more they’ll learn about what carpet will work best for you.

• What room will the carpet be installed in?
• How much traffic will flow through that room?
• Do you expect a lot of entertaining in that room?
• How large is your family? Ages?
• Is their direct access from the outside?

The consultant isn’t being nosy; they are attempting to ensure you get a product that’s perfect for your needs and desires. By getting a detailed picture of how you’ll be living once the carpet is installed, they’ll have a better idea of choices to steer you to so you’ll be happy with your final selection.

Pile types

Pile refers to the style of carpet – how it’s woven and constructed. While every carpet starts as a loop pile, some loops are trimmed and become cut pile.

Berber – this is a loop pile with small tufts that stands up well under pressure

Frieze – tightly twisted fibers that give exceptional durability

Patterned – a combination of loop and cut pile used to create different looks

Plush – closely packed yarn gives carpet a smooth look and feel

Saxony – less dense than plush, but the fibers are treated with a heat process to make them stand up straight

Shag – long, loosely spaced fibers that present an informal look

Textured plush – patterned plush where yarn in varying colors and heights are used to create a textured look

Fiber types

Two things have the greatest impact on how well a carpet will handle throughout its life: pile and fiber. You’ll find carpet is made from two different categories of materials: natural or synthetic. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, so it’s important to weigh your options carefully.

Acrylic – a synthetic material that has many of the properties of wool. It’s durable and helps hide dirt, cleans well, and resists mildew.

Nylon – one of the most common carpet materials, nylon is durable and stain-resistant. Not all carpet is created equal, so it’s important to do your due diligence.

Olefin – the least expensive material, it’s synthetic and made to change out on a regular basis. You’ll often find this used in rentals so it can be changed out with frequency.

Polyester – dyes well, which makes this synthetic material popular when creating vibrant, fade-resistant colors.

Wool – a natural, hypoallergenic material that is very durable. It repels oils and stains, and is warm and comfortable underfoot.

What is Formaldehyde?

Hard-Surface Flooring

Laminate, engineered hardwood, and vinyl are most likely to possess formaldehyde. Fortunately, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB), have put strict standards in place for all flooring manufacturers within the United States.  Formaldehyde is measured in “parts per million” (ppm).  The range for formaldehyde in normal air quality is 0.03ppm to 0.08ppm.  The standard upheld by the EPA and CARB under the TSCA Title VI Compliant Certification is 0.05ppm (link to EPA formaldehyde information). This is lower than the air we breathe regularly.  They impose the same standard on products imported into the U.S. Despite this, it is much harder to enforce outside our country.

What Does This Mean for the Consumer?

First, make sure you know where your flooring comes from.  Rest assured that The Carpet Guys proudly install products Made in America.

Second, if you have new flooring installed, give it time to air out.  New flooring off-gases most of its formaldehyde within the first 24-48 hours.  So, if you already have one of these types of floors, know that your home has probably already returned to normal.

To put it simply, AC ratings define how strong and durable the said laminate is; the higher the number, the stronger and more durable the flooring is. An AC4 rating is our most common rating with laminate flooring. Its also important to remember that a high AC rating doesn’t mean its the best laminate flooring you can choose from, the AC ratings of laminate all serve their own purpose that will be preferred by different people.

Laminate Flooring gets its AC rating by being put through rigorous testing. This is to determine how resistant it is to abrasion, moisture and a number of other different factors. 

AC ratings range from AC1 to AC5 – AC1 being the lowest score, with the laminate’s strength increasing with each higher rating. 

AC5-rated laminate is used more commonly in commercial areas like shops, this is because it can withstand a very high amount of pressure and foot traffic.

In order to receive an AC rating, the laminate has to pass each test. If it doesn’t, it will not receive a rating. For this reason, the AC rating is a sign of quality in laminate floors. The AC ratings can vary depending on which laminate flooring you choose.

 

AC1

Suitable for moderate traffic. Best suited to use in bedrooms or guest rooms.

AC2

Suitable for general traffic like Dining or living rooms.

AC3

Suitable for heavy traffic. Generally suitable for all areas, especially areas such as hallways.

AC4

Suitable for moderate traffic in commercial spaces. Think small offices, cafés or smaller retail outlets.

AC5

Suitable for heavy traffic in commercial spaces. Large department stores, public buildings and large offices.

 

Thickness Variety in Laminate Flooring

Thickness is an important factor to consider when deciding on which laminate flooring is best suited to you. A thicker laminate will provide a more real wood feel, the thicker depth also results in a more detailed etching. A thicker width can also reduce echo in your room.

A thinner Laminate Flooring may not include as many benefits, however, it is considerably cheaper.

Laminate flooring is manufactured between the thicknesses of 6mm and 12mm. Usually, a durable laminate floor is between 10mm and 12mm, however, if your subfloor is level and adequate, 7mm or 8mm is definitely an option.
