Which underlay should I use?

Which underlay should I use?

“Which underlay should I use?”  is a question we often get asked.  Firstly, it will depend on how you are installing your floor. Secondly, it will depend upon whether you have underfloor heating or not. And finally, you will need to decide whether you require sound proofing or thermal insulation.

Here are the different types of underlay, and when you should use them:

Standard

Our range of standard underlay can be used with any engineered hardwood floor (not solid wood or parquet blocks).  The floor is floated over the underlay, which acts as a cushion between the two.  This is the ideal choice for anyone requiring sound proofing or thermal insulation.  If you want a sound proofing, look for the decibel (dB) rating because the higher the rating, the better the sound proofing quality. Alternatively, if you are looking for thermal resistance, look for the tog rating.  Again, the higher the tog rating, the more effective it is with providing warmth and thermal insulation.

Underfloor Heating

Our range of underfloor heating underlays have been specially designed to be used with underfloor heating systems and engineered wooden flooring.  They have a very low tog rating, which allows the sufficient transfer of heat through to the surface of your floor.

Glued

Finally, our glued underlay can be used with both solid wooden floors and engineered wooden floors.   The underlays themselves have slots running throughout.  The glue goes into the slots and your hardwood flooring is fixed on top.  The underlay acts as a sound proofing layer between the subfloor and your wooden floor.  This means that your hardwood flooring is fixed into position rather than being floated.
