Which is the best adhesive for hardwood?

When gluing hardwood flooring down to concrete, you should always use a flexible flooring adhesive.  This particular type of adhesive will allow your flooring to expand, contract and naturally move without causing any damage to the planks of flooring.

We think that the best adhesive for hardwood is Sika MS Flexible Wood Flooring Adhesive Tub.  This should be applied with a trowel to create a full surface bondAlternatively, Sika 52 Wood Flooring Adhesive Sausage can be used with a barrel gun. Both of the adhesives are suitable for all types of engineered wood flooring, and solid wooden flooring which is under 150mm in width.

For wider planks of solid wood flooring (anything over 150mm in width), we would recommend that you use Sika T54 Flexible Wood Flooring Adhesive. This is a much stronger glue, therefore will hold the wider planks of flooring in place sufficiently.

How do I glue my wooden floor down?

You can only glue your wooden floor down if you have a concrete subfloor. Here are a few steps you should follow when gluing your wooden floor down.

  • Firstly, you will need to check that your subfloor is properly prepared. It should be flat, level and dry.
  • Always fully read the instructions which come in the boxes of flooring.
  • You should use a full surface bond with a flexible flooring adhesive.
  • Spread the adhesive on to the floor in sections, then lay the floor on top.
  • Remember to leave an expansion gap around the edge of the room.
  • Add the finishing touches by adding skirting, beading, pipe covers and door bars.
