The difference between Herringbone and Chevron Flooring

The difference between Herringbone and Chevron Flooring

Herringbone and Chevron are very different styles and types of flooring but most of us still get them confused.  Both of them are very popular choices amongst people who want something different that will create an outstanding floor. At a first glance they do look similar as they both give a zig zag effect flooring. However, at a closer look they are actually very different.  Here is why:

Herringbone Wood Flooring explained

Herringbone is actually a pattern that you can create with parquet block flooring. It is by far the most popular pattern created and dates back centuries.  The actual parquet blocks are much smaller than usual planks of wood.  They have been designed specifically to create different geometric patterns, with the herringbone zig zag being one of them.  The end of the blocks are cut at a 90 degree angle so that the zig zag pattern is created with a staggered finish, unlike chevron flooring that results in a ‘V’ shaped zig zag.

Chevron Wood Flooring explained

It also creates a zig zag pattern but with each block creating a ‘V’ shape when joined to the next. Chevron flooring can only create the chevron pattern.  The blocks are shorter and narrower than most usual planks of flooring.  The ends are cut at a 45 degree angle which allows the chevron pattern to be created.

The main differences between herringbone and chevron

The main differences are:

  • Herringbone planks are cut at a 90 degree angle, whereas chevron planks are cut at a 45 degree angle.
  • Chevron wood flooring gives you a zigzag pattern which comes to a point at the top of each zigzag.
  • Herringbone wood flooring still gives you a zigzag pattern but with a more of a staggered effect.

Both herringbone and chevron floors are going to give you a wow factor.  If you are looking for something that it a little bit different from the usual plank style flooring, definitely consider Chevron or Herringbone.
